MILLIONS North America: a resounding success

    May 28, 2019May 30, 2019 | 5:10pm | Playground

Another great event has come and gone at Playground. The partypoker LIVE MILLIONS North America left in its wake a trail of memories that many will cherish for the rest of their lives. The festival, although nicely highlighted by the presence of many international pros, was taken over by local players, who took down 7 of the 11 titles, including the Main Event, to reinforce Quebec’s reputation of breeding strong poker players. A total of $8,517,161 was paid out through 11 events. All tournaments met the guarantee and offered some amazing prizes. A resounding success!

The $10,000 + $300 Main Event was strongly contested. The final 8 counted three locals, but after Ruben Perceval’s elimination in 8th place, only two were left for Day 5: Danick Landriault and François Billard. Alongside them were Rabichow, Fontan, Petteri, and Kolonias, all very strong players. François Billard was the last man standing, and after a grueling 15-hour final day, he claimed the stunning Main Event trophy and $961,400 in prize money, making his large following and the whole region proud.

The tournament was the first $10K buy-in Main Event hosted at Playground, and was a resounding success in so many ways. partypoker LIVE and Playground’s commitment was to allow 200 qualifiers to experience a major tournament, to play a world-class structure and rub shoulders with some of the great names in the game. In total, 203 players came from the various satellites: online Phases, live Direct Satellites, and of course, STEP Satellites, which allowed so many players to level up and play in the big league for a fraction of the cost. Six of them were presented to you in a series of features. Half of those made Day 2, and Christine Park was the last to go; she was eliminated late on Day 2.

Marc Saddik, however, blew everyone’s mind with his overall MILLIONS North America performance. Qualified for the Main Event for 0$ through the STEP satellites, he did not make Day 2, but the experience must have filled him with fresh knowledge and unwavering confidence, because he went on to claim not one, but two MILLIONS North America trophies in Event #10 and Event #11, not to mention $20,071 in prizes. This is an unbelievable feat that will be remembered for a long time… especially by Marc himself!

The Montreal Open was taken down by Danny Boyaci, a local grinder who can often be seen on the toughest cash games at Playground. Yirui Zhang took the Playground 200 trophy. After winning that event, he went on to take 8th position in the Playground 1000, a tournament that was won by Lily Kornik, a lovely lady from Montreal who proved that she belongs in the most exclusive winner’s circles. Check the Official Event Blog to read about all our champions!

The player party, an important night of any partypoker LIVE tour stop, was one to remember. It was held on Thursday May 24 at Bord’elle, a classy burlesque cabaret, and the theme was… Enchanted Forest! Players and partypoker LIVE staff had an amazing time letting loose in the well-decorated venue. Another way to infuse some extra fun in the event was the Ultimate Poker Couple promotion, won by Mike Mcdonald and Kitty Kuo, who managed to beat Kristen Bicknell and Alex Foxen in their Main Event finishing position average. They win a $12K package to MILLIONS Europe!

The next stop on the 2019 MILLIONS tour is MILLIONS Vegas ‘Special Edition,’ which is the latest addition to the yearly schedule. It is a stand-alone tournament held at Aria from June 28 to July 2 and boasts a $5,000,000 guarantee.

As for us at Playground, we are extremely proud of the MILLIONS North America success, and are now looking to the future where the WSOP-C awaits! To all participants: players, partypoker LIVE, their staff, Playground staff, and everyone who stayed informed from afar, we want to say: “Thank you!”

“King” Arthur crowned Champion of Event #12 PLO Bounty

    May 27, 2019May 27, 2019 | 4:46am | Playground

The event #12 final table was a cinch for Arthur W.  He was hitting everything and could not seem to go wrong.  He eliminated most of the players on the final table, which is a good thing in a bounty tournament for sure.

The heads-up action lasted only a few hands.  Both Andy d’Alessandro and Arthur were definitely not afraid to gamble.  Andy did manage to pick up a few hands, but it was not enough.

Peeking at an acceptable hand, Andy made his move and Arthur did not hesitate long before calling.

Andy: Ace of Hearts King of Spades Jack of Spades 5 of Spades

Arthur: King of Clubs Jack of Clubs Jack of Hearts 10 of Diamonds

Board: 4 of Diamonds 2 of Clubs 10 of Clubs Queen of Clubs 3 of Hearts

Andy got his straight, but unfortunately for him Arthur hit a flush and that put an end to it all.  The hand, the heads-up, the tournament, and, the MILLIONS North America Event were over.

    Congratulations to all the winners!

    Event #12 Champion: Arthur W, $4,254

    Last Hand of Play:

    Second Place: Andy D’Alessandro, $3,230

The MILLIONS North America Champion: François “Roux” Billard!

    May 27, 2019May 30, 2019 | 4:03am | Playground

The $10,300 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS North America is in the books! Another great event goes down in history at Playground. After five long days of poker, François Billard emerged the victor and cashes $961,400 ($749,030 were secured from the ICM deal, plus $212,370 for the win).

The final table was reached on Day 4, and the action went on until only six were left. These six players came back at 12:00PM today for the final battle, all vying for the massive $1,000,000 first prize. Francois Billard, Joni Petteri Jouhkimainen, Kevin Rabichow, Castrillon Fontan, Alexandros Kolonias, and Danick Landriault were rounding the Stream table, pumped up for the action.

Danick Landriault was the first to leave, and play continued 5-way for over 6 hours before Day 5 saw another elimination. During that time, many showdowns favoured the shorter stack, and many players took turns on the driver’s seat. Castrillon Fontan was the next player to leave. After losing most of his chips to Kevin Rabichow, he was emptied by François Billard.

Alexandros Kolonias followed, just before the dinner break. When Billard, Rabichow, and Jouhkimainen came back, they negotiated a deal that left $212,370 up for grabs and chopped the remainder of the prize pool according to the ICM calculator. The battle continued without any drop in intensity. After all, there were still six figures to shoot for.

Jouhkimainen was not able to get anything going and lost quite a bit of chips, until his chip situation forced him to take a lot of risks, and one of those moves turned out to be fatal. Billard took his chips and the 2 finalists were ready for the ultimate honour of the festival: The MILLIONS North America title.

Before initiating the duel, the two finalists took a short walk to pose besides the MILLIONS Tour trophy:

And play continued with an increasingly agitated crowd. François Billard being a local player, his rail was the largest, and consequently the most vocal, chanting his nickname virtually every time he won a pot, big or small. “Roux, Roux, Roux, Roooouuuuuuux!!!” And Roux could only smile. One could imagine that such support gave him some much needed strength in this final lap, after playing an average of 12 hours a day for 5 days. In the great white north, we call this home-ice advantage! Here are a few shots of the heads-up battle:

    Eyes on the prize:

Billard started the heads-up match with a substantial lead, but Kevin Rabichow managed to even things out, but this turn of events was short-lived. The final hand was near.

Rabichow was on the button and bumped it to 12M chips. Billard 3bet to 42M, which was called, and both players went to a flop with a sizeable 84M in the middle to fight for. Billard placed a conservative continuation bet of 26M chips, and Rabichow called. On the turn, Billard did not slow down. In fact, having improved his hand, he did the exact opposite: all-in! Rabichow called the bet, only to realize that his tournament life was hanging by a thread… 11 cards would make him an overwhelming chip leader, but the rest of the deck would crown his rival.

It was truly great to watch the sheer happiness in François Billard’s face, and about 20 people singing his praises. The man of the hour walked among his peers, distributing handshakes, hugs, and headbutts. A well-deserved win. To our champion! Congratulations!

The partypoker LIVE MILLIONS North America Champion: François Billard – $961,400 and the Main Event Trophy

    Runner-up: Kevin Rabichow – $578,990

    A glimpse of the celebrations:

    Marc Saddik wins Event #11!

    May 27, 2019May 29, 2019 | 3:44am | Playground

The cards were in the air at 11:00am with players starting with a 30,000 chip stack playing on six-handed tables through 30 minute blind levels. There were single re-entries available until the close of late registration and with 114 total entries (including 11 re-entries), the $50,000 guaranteed prize pool was surpassed, creating an up top first place payout of $13,260.

The action was aggressive and the lead changed many times throughout the day. First it was local regular Yannick Labattaglia who was in the lead, and then later on local Mehdi Badreddine, but neither of them made it into the money.

Once the money bubble burst, the bustouts happened rapidly and soon the final table was formed. When the tournament was down to only five players, an ICM deal was reached as all players were quite evenly stacked save for one, local Mark Fitzpatrick, who was the only player close to the 1M mark. The ICM deal required that they play to a winner and that 10% of the remaining prize pool be left out of the deal to go to the first place winner, along with the Champion’s trophy and the bragging rights that come along with it.

It took a very long time for the first player to head to the rail, and one by one, they exited until the tournament went heads-up between Mark Fitzpatrick and Marc Saddik. Fitzpatrick started off with about a 2 to 1 chip advantage but then Saddik gained some ground. A hand developed where Fitzpatrick had King of Hearts Jack of Clubs and Saddik had Jack of Diamonds 10 of Spades… the flop came King of Clubs Queen of Diamonds 4 of Clubs giving Fitzpatrick a straight draw. The turn came the Ace of Diamonds and BOOM, Saddik made his Broadway straight! Over 1 million chips were shipped from Fitzpatrick to Saddik.

Just a few hands later, the final hand developed. Fitzpatrick shoved Queen of Clubs Queen of Diamonds, and Saddik called with Ace of Hearts 5 of Diamonds. The flop came Ace of Spades 10 of Clubs 6 of Spades and both players were in disbelief. Then comes a 5 of Spades on the turn, and 9 of Spades on the river, giving Saddik 2 pair, and crowning the champion in Event #11.

Of special mention, Marc Saddik has now won back-to-back championships, as he also shipped Event #10 last night, the $200 + $30 + $100 Bounty over $21,000! What an amazing feat!

Event #11 Champion, Marc Saddik, $11,397

    Last hand of play:

Lily Kornik wins the Playground 1000

    May 26, 2019May 30, 2019 | 8:23pm | Playground

After an epic battle that lasted for hours, Lily Kornik is the champion of Event #7, the Playground 1000.

The Playground 1000 brought out an impressive field of 260 entries. The huge field built a prize pool that went far beyond the $100,000 guarantee and created a top prize of $55,430 for the eventual champion. Ali Keshavarz was the Day 1 chip leader.

A total of 82 players bagged chips for Day 2. The chip leader from this flight, Lily Kornik – better known to Playground regulars as “Big Salami” – kept up her strong Day 1 play and jumped out to an early chip lead. Although some other players had their turn as chip leader during Day 2, Kornik was never far off the lead. After the players reached the money, Kornik jumped back up to the top of the leaderboard and stayed there until the chips went in the bag at the end of level 26. Five players were set to return for Day 3 action, which would play down to a winner.

Ariel Celestino was the first to fall, taken out by Kornik. Ariel Celestino exited in fifth place for $15,000. Kornik commented how she very much enjoyed playing with Celestino over the last few days and she felt that she learnt a lot from him. The next to go was Armand King, better known to many as the “Oyster King”. Kornik sent King to the rail in fourth place, good for a cash of $20,060. Kornik then flopped trip kings to eliminate Robert Gariepy who took home $27,060 for his third place finish.

The heads-up battle between Kornik and Frederic Cossette was epic. It not only lasted for hours, it saw the chip lead swing back and forth after every all-in hand. Kornik had asked Cossette if he was interested in an ICM chip chop, but Cossette preferred to play on to a winner. Kornik had the lead for some time, but then lost some key flips and fell to second place. She made it back in a couple of key hands, until finally, the last hand of the tournament was played.

In the last hand of play, Lily got it in with Ace of Clubs 3 of Diamonds, and was called by Cossette who had Ace of Hearts 4 of Hearts. As fate would have it for Lily, the flop fell 7 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds 3 of Spades, and Lily started to shake. Her husband, who had been watching the heads-up battle, put his arm around her as the two of them watched the run out. The turn brought the 2 of Diamonds, and then on the river came the 3 of Clubs, to seal the deal. And just like that, a winner was crowned in The Playground 1000.

Event #7 Champion: Lily Kornik, $55,430

    Last hand of play:

    Up next: PLO Bounty!

    May 26, 2019 | 6:56pm | Playground

The MILLIONS North America comes to a close tonight with a fun event that is sure to see chips flying around the table. Event #12, the $200 + $30 + $100 PLO Bounty, gets underway at 7:00pm.

The PLO Bounty is sure to create a lot of excitement. As the final event in the series, this tournament is your last chance to get your hands on some of the coveted MILLIONS hardware and comes at a relatively modest buy-in. Also, the format is sure to create dramatic situations and build huge pots; between the bounty chips in play and four hole cards, the action will heat up to a fever pitch.

Providing players with a starting stack of 30,000 in chips, this unlimited re-entry event will play eight-handed for as many 20-minute levels as it takes to determine a winner. Late registration and unlimited re-entries will be available until 9:15pm.

Don’t miss out on this exciting event!

Rabichow and Billard maintain nine figures

    May 26, 2019May 26, 2019 | 2:42pm | Playground

The 5 Main Event finalists are now on break. Rabichow, who orchestrated Landriault’s elimination, is in the lead. Billard is also very healthy, not too far behind. Don’t miss a hand, follow the Stream!

    Who will be the champion?

    May 26, 2019May 26, 2019 | 11:58am | Playground

The MILLIONS North America Main Event will crown its champion this afternoon.

After two starting flights and four days of play, only six players remain. These 6 players are each guaranteed a six-figure score at this point, but you can be sure that none of them will be satisfied with anything less than the championship. Day 5 will play 90-minute levels before moving to 60-minute levels when heads-up play begins.

Kevin Rabichow starts the day as the chip leader, followed by François Billard, who was one card away from elimination yesterday when facing Danick Landriault in a showdown with 2 over cards. The beloved queen showed up on the river, and Billard started running it up. Landriault’s Day 4 started strong, but after the final table was formed, a few unpleasant runouts made it tough to keep his belongings together. His massive stack dwindled down to 33M chips, and he starts Day 5 in 6th place.

Six players start the day. Only one will wear the crown. Follow the action here and on the live Stream, which starts at 12:30PM with a 30-minute delay.

    Here comes the 6-Max!

    May 26, 2019May 26, 2019 | 11:05am | Playground

Event #11 of the MILLIONS North America, the $500 + $50 6-Max, is about to begin!

Although the series is winding down, there is still a day of exciting action ahead, starting with this single-day event. The 6-Max starts players with 30,000 in chips and guarantees a prize pool of at least $50,000. It will last for as many 30-minute levels as it takes to crown a champion, and players will be able to make a single re-entry during the first six levels of play. The late registration and re-entry period will be open until 2:15pm.

As with the rest of the series, this event will prove to be popular with players because of the whopping prize pool guarantee and attractive format. The stacks will be deep and the blinds will come around quickly in this short-handed format so players will have to open their ranges and play lots of pots if they hope to take this one down.

The stage is set and the action will kick off soon. Good luck to all!

    Marc Saddik wins Event #10

    May 26, 2019May 26, 2019 | 7:03am | Playground

After more than 11 hours of play, Marc Saddik is the Event #10 champion.

In total, 214 players fired a bullet and got into the action.  As is customary with bounty tournaments, the action was intense, swift, and without reprieve.  Bounty chips were exchanging hands at an impressive rate.  Ranking among the most affordable of this event’s tournaments, many of the local players showed up to have some fun tonight.

The final table was a swift and tidy affair.  No more than 15 or 20 minutes went by without one person leaving the table.  The chips changed owners very often and the balance of power shifted accordingly.

The heads up match lasted only a few hands between Ayo Smith and Marc Saddik. After eliminating Mohammed Alamelhuda a few hands prior, Marc’s stack was huge. He had most of the chips on his side of the table and obviously did not intend on wasting any time by being too picky. As soon as Ayo went all-in Marc was there to try to take him out.

Ayo: King of Spades 8 of Spades

Marc: 5 of Spades 7 of Hearts

Board: 7 of Spades 4 of Diamonds 9 of Spades King of Clubs 7 of Clubs

And just like that, we have our Event #10 Champion – Marc Saddik.  He wins the money, the bounties, the trophy and, last but not least, the bragging rights.  Congratulation to all the winners!

Event #10 Champion: Marc Saddik, $8,684

    Second Place: Ayo Smith, $6,540

Brian Yoon takes down the $10,000 + $300 High Roller

    May 26, 2019May 26, 2019 | 3:23am | Playground

Event #6, the $10,000 + $300 High Roller, started on Thursday, offering the players a 1,000,000 starting stack and unlimited re-entries until the start of level 13 on Day 2. There was a great turnout on Day 1, with a total of 52 entries (including 14 re-entries). Some of the best names in the business mixed it up with many experienced amateur grinders who were all battling it out on the felt, and as the chips moved around, the lead changed throughout the day. At the end of play, 28 players bagged and tagged to return for Day 2 action. The top stack in play belonged to James Romero, who bagged 4,320,000.

Day 2 saw the field grow to a total of 102 entries, surpassing the $1,000,000 guarantee. Pierre-Paul Paulin dominated the field and was the chip leader coming into Day 3. The top 10 players were in the money and one by one, they hit the rail, until two players were heads-up: Pierre-Paul Paulin and Brian Yoon. Their stacks were almost equal and the battle lasted for hours. A few key hands changed everything, and then it was Brian Yoon who took the lead. In an epic battle between the two players that lasted hours, Paulin never gave up and did his best to try to come back to take the lead, but Yoon caught key hands when he needed them and never let go of being in the driver’s seat.

On the final hand of play, Yoon raised it up pre-flop to 2,500,000, and Paulin made the call. Paulin checked the 2 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts flop, and Yoon put in 1,800,000, which was called by Paulin. The turn brought the 10 of Spades, and again Paulin checked. Yoon now made it 6,500,000, and Paulin responded by shoving his stack. Yoon called.

Paulin: King of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds
Yoon: Queen of Clubs 10 of Hearts

Yoon had turned top pair, and just needed to fade a King or a Jack on the river.

River: 5 of Spades, and just like that, a champion was crowned in Event #6, the $10,000 + $300 High Roller.

First place champion, Brian Yoon, $300,000

    Second place, Pierre-Paul Paulin, $185,000

The MILLIONS North America final table

    May 26, 2019May 26, 2019 | 2:42am | Playground

Day 4 of the MILLIONS North America has come to an end, as the final six are ready to now battle it out tomorrow on the final table.

Only 16 players returned today for Day 4. When play began on Day 3, 66 players were still in contention, only three eliminations from the money bubble. After roughly an hour of play, the money bubble burst and the top 63 finalists secured at least $20,000 each. When the flight concluded, the 16 remaining players had locked up at least $40,000 each, but you can be sure that everyone’s focus today was on the $1,000,000 champion’s prize.

Day 4 featured 90-minute blind levels and 8-handed play. It took quite some time to form the “unofficial” final table of 9 players, and then even longer to make it down to the final six. Jason James was the first to exit the tournament room, finishing in 10th place for $60,000. The next player to hit the rail was Armin Razael, finishing in ninth spot for $100,000. Ruben Receval, a local player who has made WPT final tables here at Playground, followed in eighth position for a cool $150,000. The last player to exit was Benjamin Heath, finishing in seventh for $200,000.

Here the six final table members of the Millions North America:
