    Khalilian leads the final eight

    May 4, 2019 | 11:41pm | Playground

Day 2 of the May Power Weekend edition of the Strangers in the Night started with the 76 players that emerged from the 370 Day 1 entries in this event. At the outset, Robert Gariepy led the field with a healthy chip lead over his rivals, one that he was able to parlay into an impressive stack at the final table. But by the end of the flight, a new chip leader emerged. Mohammadamin Khalilian had brought forward a healthy stack from his Day 1 flight and managed to stay above the chip average throughout Day 2, and he finished the flight in impressive fashion by running up his stack to dizzying heights.

Day 3 gets underway tomorrow at 1pm.

Here are the chip counts for the eight remaining players:

The Strangers in the Night is down to the last twelve players, as play continues on the two final tables. Since the last break, Mohammadamin Khalilian has kept his foot on the gas pedal to push his stack to new heights, as he now holds a dominant chip lead over the field.

But there is still time for everything to change as the players head down the home stretch on Day 2. They will play two more levels before bagging chips for tomorrow’s Day 3.

Play has resumed in the Strangers in the Night, following a seating redraw. The field is now down to 16 players on two tables, each of them eyeing the big money at the top of the prize list.

Mohammadamin Khalilian has managed to maintain his chip led but will have to stay sharp to fend off the rest of the field.

After the seemingly endless hand-for-hand play on the money bubble, the field in the Strangers in the Night was quickly reduced to only 20 players.

As play resumes in level 21, there are three players who have set themselves apart from the field, each with stacks of more than a million in chips, while most others find themselves below the chip average. Longtime tournament leader Robert Gariepy was recently dethroned by Mohammadamin Khalilian, who managed to chip up significantly during the last level of play.

After more than an hour of hand-for-hand play, the remaining players in the Strangers in the Night have finally reached the money.

It is not uncommon for the bubble to drag out in some tournaments, however, today’s bubble was truly exceptional. Although many players had spots where they were at risk, the at-risk player kept coming out ahead. Until, finally, a battle of the blinds sent a short stack to the rail. In this case, it was looking good for the short stack both before the flop and on the flop, as he managed to make a pair, however, the turn brought in the bigger stack’s gutshot straight draw and burst the money bubble in the process.

With one level of play in the books on Day 2, the players in the field of Day 2 of the Strangers in the Night have brought a determined and focused approach to this afternoon’s flight. The prospect of a five-figure payout for the eventual champion is clearly on everyone’s mind.

Although a few players have already hit the rail, the field still stands 64 strong, now less than 20 places away from the money bubble.

Here’s a look at some of the players from the first level of play:
