    Event #1 Champion: Jonathan Jette-Prince

    May 2, 2019 | 7:19pm | Playground

Event #1, the $100 + $10 Mix Max Re-entry, got this latest edition of the Power Weekend off to a fast start. Drawing a field of 63 entries, enough to easily surpass the prize pool guarantee, the Mix Max Re-entry put the players to the test, as they worked their way through full ring, 8-handed, 6-handed and 4-handed play to determine a champion.

Although other players were faster out of the gate, Jonathan Jette-Prince was able to find the right pace to finish strong. He made appearances on the leader board throughout the afternoon and found a way to save the best for last to beat the other four finalists and emerge as a Power Weekend champion. Congratulations!

    Last Hand of Play:

    Action on full throttle

    May 2, 2019 | 6:35pm | Playground

The Mix Max event slimmed down from 2 tables of 4 players to a 3-way affair in no time. With blinds driving the action hard, there was little room for our 3 last men standing to breathe. Jean-François Betit was the shortest with a little over 100K, and facing 2 superpowers with over 500K each. Betit, given his chip disadvantage, was struggling to stand his ground, and his stack, after just a few blinds, had lost half its consistency. When Jonathan Jetté-Prince folded his button, he ceased the opportunity to move in with 66K on a 16K big blind. Marco D’Angelo had a marginal hand, but made a sound call:

    D’angelo: 9 of Spades 7 of Spades
Betit: 8 of Hearts 3 of Spades

Board: 5 of Hearts Ace of Hearts Jack of Clubs Ace of Diamonds 4 of Spades

Betit did not find the help he needed, and took a walk. Well played!

    Faucher leads the final eight

Following the latest break in the action, the field is down to two tables, each playing four-handed poker. The blinds are coming around more quickly than ever and the big blind is now worth more than a third of a starting stack for this event so expect each pot to be tightly contested. Everyone still in contention has a realistic shot at taking this one down, however, the players in the field have their eyes set on our current chip leader, Stephane Faucher.

With blinds at 2K/4K/4K, confrontations are quite frequent, especially with the aggressive play dictated by the Mix Max format. Eric Perrier got himself in an amazing spot and was hoping to double up against a crushed Yan Gohier:

Perrier: 6 of Hearts 6 of Clubs
Gohier: 4 of Clubs 4 of Spades

Board: 8 of Clubs Queen of Spades 2 of Diamonds… 4 of Diamonds Jack of Spades!

What a turn! Yan Gohier (pictured below) is now among the leaders, and Perrier is stretching his legs. Twelve players are now competing on three 4-handed tables.

    Betit takes the lead

    May 2, 2019 | 3:16pm | Playground

Our last 4 tables are booting players at a regular pace, and they will keep doing so until they are 4-handed. Jean-François Betit, thanks to a great run in the last few levels, took the lead and is best positioned to assume the high-variance short-handed play.

Although the Mix Max got off to a slow start, it has only picked up pace since, culminating shortly before the break with a number of big pots that helped generate 13 re-entries to push the prize pool well past the $5,000 guarantee. Now that the late registration and re-entry period has ended, we may see the action tighten up a bit, however, the tables will be re-balanced as play continues so the players will have to adjust their ranges accordingly.

One player, Joseph Sabbah, managed to run up an imposing stack of more than five times the current chip average before the break, putting him head and shoulders above the rest of the field. But there is lots of poker left to play this afternoon so anything could happen from here.

With roughly 20 minutes of play left before the first break in the action, the late registration and re-entry period is nearly over. But there is still time to join the growing field!

The action has opened up since the last update; eight players have already re-entered, and the number of entries has eclipsed the 50 mark, meaning that this event has already surpassed the $5,000 guarantee on the prize pool.

There are now over a million chips in play. And the players will certainly need all the ammunition they can get as the number of players per table will soon be adjusted according to the size of the field.

Here’s another look at some of the players during the last level of play:

With two levels in the books, the Mix Max Re-entry has been steadily gaining entries since the first card was pitched. Everyone is still in their original seat, as play has started out cautiously without any early bust outs or re-entries up to this point.

The stage is set for the May Power Weekend! Event #1, the $100 + $10 Mix Max Re-entry, features a guaranteed prize pool of $5,000. This event starts players with 20,000 in chips and allows for unlimited re-entries throughout the first six 20-minute levels of play so expect this one to get off to a fast start.

The Mix Max format means that the number of players per table will vary along with the number of players in the field. When there are more than 97 players, each table will play 10-handed. As the field shrinks, so will the number of players at each table. Play will be 8-handed when the field is between 96 and 61 players. It will become a 6-max when the number of runners is from 60 to 25, before finally moving into 4-handed play in the late stages when there are between 24 and 6 players in contention. The final table will begin when five players remain.

The dealers are ready, the players are taking their seats, and the cards are now in the air. Good luck to all!
