35 players advance from Day 1C

    August 23, 2019 | 10:00pm | Playground

Day 1C of the Colossus brought out a total of 233 entries. Helped along by 54 re-entries, the large field battled it out for 17 30-minute levels before being reduced to the 35 finalists. Those who advanced have already secured the min-cash, and, more importantly, a chance to make a deep run to get a much bigger piece of the $1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool.

This flight was brought to its end in a situation that is familiar to many tournament players; a pre-flop all in where middle pair is up against two over cards. But this time, the over cards were a little different than what one might expect. It was pocket sevens against 10 of Hearts 9 of Hearts, and the window card gave the suited connectors a decisive lead, one that would last until the river and bring an end to this flight.

The combined Day 1 results can be found here.

As play resumes in level 17, only 37 players remain, meaning that Day 1C is only two eliminations away from bagging chips for Day 2. Lots chips changed hands during the last level, upsetting the leaderboard and creating a new chip leader, Felix Noiseux.

The current chip average provides roughly 25 big blinds, which leaves some room to maneuver, but for those in the field who are below the chip average, the options are far more limited. For many, it’s “ship-or-fold” poker from this point on.

The remaining players on Day 1C of the Colossus have shifted gears. The approach of most players has moved from one of chip accumulation to survival mode, as they enter the fifteenth level of play.

Despite the slow structure, the blinds are beginning to catch up on many players now that the chip average provides roughly 30 big blinds. The chip leaders are still sitting comfortably, but the majority of the remaining players have had their options drastically reduced and are now waiting for only the best cards or the best spots before they put chips in the middle.

Here’s a look at some of the remaining players:

    Courage leads after 12 levels

Following the third break in the action on Day 1C, there is a new chip leader. Edward Courage is out in front of the pack with a stack of slightly more than double the current chip average, which provides him roughly 74 big blinds.

There are several others in the field with six-figure stacks, but it remains to be seen who will emerge from this flight. The cut-off point is set at the last 35 players, which marks both the money bubble and the end of the flight. The mood in the tournament hall is becoming increasingly tense, and the pressure will only mount from here.

As the time winds down on the twelfth level of play on Day 1C, only 73 players remain in contention. The top 35 finishers will advance their stacks to Day 2 so the pressure is beginning to mount in the tournament hall.

There is now a significant gap between the big and small stacks in the field, which has led to two distinct play dynamics. Some are fortunate enough to have lots of blinds at their disposal so they are able to play a wide range of hands and take any kind of line they please, but many others find themselves in the danger zone with only a handful of blinds so their options are limited to playing only the strongest hands with minimal post-flop action to try to secure a double up.

Here’s a look at some of the remaining players:

    Kings are good for Quirion

    • Level: 11
    • Small Blind: 600

A hand that just played out between Denis Quirion and Nabil Nahoul caught the attention of not only the rest of the players at table 24 but a good portion of the tournament hall too.

It started out as a three-way pot between Quirion, Nahoul and Rene Majeau when all the chips went in on an eight-high flop. Quirion, the pre-flop aggressor, made a hefty c-bet that was called by Majeau before Nahoul check-raised all in. Quirion immediately went over the top and moved all in, which left Majeau in a very tough spot. After some time in the tank, Majeau found the fold button so hands could be tabled.

Quirion appeared to be very confident throughout all the action on the flop. With a pair of kings on an eight-high board, he had good reason to be! But Nahoul had flopped top set, putting the kings in second place.

The turn brought a third heart, giving Quirion a king-high flush draw and greatly increasing his outs.

And the river brought the queen of hearts! Quirion made a flush and took down the huge pot, sending Nahoul to the rail in the process.

End of late registration; Asatoorian leads after the second break

    • Level: 9
    • Small Blind: 400

The late registration and re-entry period has just ended on Day 1C of the Colossus. There was a total of 233 entries before the timer sounded to indicate the start of the ninth level of play, meaning that 35 players will advance to Day 2 from this flight.

Giuseppe Perruzza relinquished his chip lead, but he remains on the leaderboard with a competitive stack. The new chip leader, Ara Asatoorian, showed a willingness to use chips to win chips, and it paid off in a big way, catapulting him to the top of the leaderboard by the eighth level of play.

The number of entries on Day 1C of the Colossus has just gone past the 200-mark with roughly an hour remaining in the late registration and re-entry period. In keeping with the trend seen earlier, most players who hit the rail in the early stages re-entered this flight, driving the number of re-entries to 38.

The action opened significantly during the last two levels, as the all-in card started making much more frequent appearances on the felts. One thing is clear, the players in Day 1C are not shy about taking risks to try to build up their stacks.

Here’s a look at the field from the last level:

Perruzza leads at the first break

Day 1C of the Colossus has been slowly but surely gaining momentum, as new players and re-entries continue to add up. The field now stands at 152 players remaining from 187 total entries, which includes 22 re-entries, showing that few players are willing to walk away from this one, most players have opted to re-enter rather than give up on this flight.

As play resumes following the first break of the afternoon, Giuseppe Perruzza more than tripled his starting stack to distance himself from the pack and establish a clear lead. But there is a long, long way to go in this flight so we will have to wait and see if he can parlay the early chip lead to a dominant Day 2 stack.

Day 1C is shaping up to be another huge starting flight. Through the first hour of play, there have been 150 entries. Although there have only been five re-entries so far, it is safe to say that there will be many, many more before the end of the late registration and re-entry period at 4:30pm.

This afternoon’s field includes a mix of local and travelling players. There is a significant contingent of players from Ontario, as well as a handful of Maritimers and Americans in the tournament hall, enough to confirm that the WSOP-C has brought out players from far and wide.

The stage is set for Day 1C

    August 23, 2019 | 11:39am | Playground

Event #1 of the WSOP-C Playground, the $300 + $30 Colossus, continues this afternoon with the third of nine live starting flights, Day 1C. Starting at noon, Day 1C promises to be another busy flight that will see hundreds of players take to the felts to battle it out until 15% of the starting field remains. Each Day 1 features an extended late registration and re-entry period so players have until 4:30pm to join this flight.

Thanks to the four Online Day 1s and two live starting flights already in the books, 140 players have advanced stacks to Day 2. Click here to see the combined Day 1 results.

The Colossus is an unlimited re-entry event; players can enter multiple starting flights. Should they qualify for Day 2 more than once, they will resume play with their largest stack and receive the corresponding cash prize for any other stacks, which will be forfeited. There are sure to be many players in the field this afternoon who are seeking to improve on their results from previous Day 1s so don’t be surprised if the action gets off to a very fast start today.

    Good luck to all!
