Day 1H chip leader Hamid Reza Ofogh bags 421,000

    August 26, 2019 | 2:50am | Playground

Day 1H has finally come to an end but there is no question, it did not come easily. Hand for hand play lasted for almost 45 minutes. With a total of 582 entries, the top 88 players were to bag and move on the Day 2, and although there were many all ins, the short stacks just kept surviving and doubling up.

The final hand of play came when Steeven Jacques shoved his stack with Ace of Clubs Jack of Diamonds and after giving it some very serious thought, Antony Hallam made the call in the big blind with seven bigs, holding 10 of Clubs 9 of Clubs.

The flop came 5 of Clubs 4 of Diamonds Queen of Clubs, giving Hallam a flush draw. The turn was the 5 of Diamonds, which was of no help, and Jacques stayed in the lead with his ace. The river changed everything when the 8 of Clubs hit the board, completing a flush for Hallam, and knocking out Jacques to bring the Day 1H field into the money.

The chip leader for tonight’s flight is local player Hamid Reza Ofogh who bagged 421,000. Ofogh  was on the leader board the entire flight, starting off in third place at the first break, then moving up to first place at the second break, and moving to second place during the third break. He played a great tournament and had a ton of fun at the same time, while staying relaxed all night long. Tjhe smile on his face says it all.

Players return tomorrow (Monday) at 12:00pm for Day 2. For a complete list of combined Day 1 chip counts, click here. (NB: tonight’s flights will be added to the list on Monday morning, and the Day 2 seating draw will also be added at that point.)

You can feel the tension in the air as the tournament is on the stone cold bubble. There have been a few all ins with a call, but so far the short stacks have come out ahead and there have not been any bustouts.

A hand just took place between Eric Benhamron and Chuck Levros Jr. that almost ended it…but once again, Eric Benhamron (the shorter stack of the two players) won the hand.

Benhamron had shoved Queen of Spades Queen of Hearts for just undedr 65,000 and received a call from Levros Jr. holding Ace of Diamonds King of Diamonds.

The board came 2 of Clubs 9 of Hearts 9 of Spades 2 of Spades 6 of Spades and Benhamron received a badly needed double-up. The players are now on break while the floor colours up the 100 value chips.

Sebastien Roy leads the group after 16 levels and four hours of play, not including break times. He is the only player above 200,000 chips, and very well-positioned to go deep in this Turbo flight. Only 61 players remain, and with the blinds going up to 2,500/5,000 after the break, we suspect the eliminations will start to come faster and faster.

On table 38 just now we witnessed an elimination, as the Turbo group moved from 70 players down to 69, always a memorable milestone.

The hand began with Jean Binette betting 7,000 under the gun. The table folded around to Cletus Severyn, pictured below, who decided to call from the button. No one else was interested in taking part.

A Jack of Hearts 3 of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds flop led to a check from Jean, and Cletus bet 12,000. This was followed by an immediate shove by Jean, matched by an equally speedy call from Cletus, who flipped over his 2 of Hearts 2 of Spades, making a set. All Jean could do was watch helplessly as his tournament ended. His pocket pair of 9 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts s didn’t hold up, and he packed up his things.

And the eliminations continue! As we were writing this post six more players dropped off the list. Only 29 more eliminations to go, and this final flight of the $300 + $30 Turbo will be in the books.

In a Turbo format, the speed of the rising blinds is often the greatest driver of play. Case in point, we lost approximately ten players in only the last few minutes, where players felt compelled to bet it all preflop on sub-optimal cards. That’s what happens when the blinds are up at 1,000/2,000 and you have less than 15,000 in your stack. Call it the Turbo Curse.

For example, on one table a player decided that his best shot was taking the plunge with a suited Queen-Six, not usually a good idea; he found himself up against an Ace-Queen and lost that battle in a hurry. On another table it was a suited King-Two; that player lost to an Ace-Queen when the aces paired on the flop. Without the ability to pick and choose the timing of the battles, players are often left out in the cold without a chance to put their jacket on.

Indeed, while this post was being written, we lost another 8 players, and we’re down to 87! Play continues…

The chips have been flying around and moving across the tables as play is very aggressive right now.

On table 90, Matthew Polishuk opened in middle position to 5,500. Daniele Sanna flat called in the cutoff position. On the button, Edward Parkinson looked down at his hole cards and decided to move all in for 21,000. Ryan Press in the small blind also moved all in (20,600). The initial raiser, Polishuk decided to fold his cards and move out of the way. The decision was on Sanna, who went into the tank, trying to decide if he should get involved or not. His stack was below average and he knew that he needed to build it up and finally decided to throw in a chip to make the call.

    The hands were tabled:

Parkinson: 10 of Clubs 10 of Hearts
Press: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Hearts
Sanna: 8 of Clubs 8 of Spades

The flop came 9 of Clubs Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds, giving Press two pair. Then came the turn, the Jack of Diamonds. Now things got interesting as both Parkinson and Sanna picked up gutshot straight draws. Parkinson needed to see a jack, and Sanna was looking for a ten, although Parkinson of course had the blockers. The river was King of Diamonds, and Parkinson made his broadway straight and received a badly needed triple-up.

As the dealer moved the chips his way, he stood up and made a little victory speech, saying “I would like to thank all of the players in the hand” as he had a big smile on his face.

With 582 players in today’s Day 1H flight, the play will continue until the field drops to 88 players. As the field is now starting to thin out with only 157 runners still in the game, the smaller stacks will start to get their chips into the middle to try to get a badly needed double-up, and then typically the players tighten up as everyone wants to make it to day 2.

While on the third break of the evening the stacks were counted and there is now a new leader: Randy Khalil has taken command and is is currently the only player above 300K, with a cool 326,600. Hamid Ofogh is right behind him with 296,000. Let’s keep a close look at this duo as both players can be dangerous with a big stack in front of them, and there are still many other tough players still in serious contention as well.

Some of the recent bustouts include: Gabriel Gingras, Sean Carpenter, Kevin Hanka, Tomas Larivee-Magni, Ryan Andrade, Vera G., Johnathan Dsouza, Chris Arvanitis, Chia Chang, Soterios T., and Marc-Andre Racine.

With registration now closed for the Colossus Turbo, we now know that this flight will only officially come to a close when 35 players remain. At this point, 150 players are still seated, battling it out on the felt for their piece of the guaranteed $1,000,000 prize pool.

That means that 115 players are going to go home disappointed.

Good luck to all of our competitors as they make their way towards the next goal, qualifying for a seat on Day 2, which kicks off tomorrow, August 26th at noon.

Braich leads the Turbo at the first break

After eight quick 15-minute levels, Pawan Braich sits atop the leaderboard with almost 90,000 chips after the first break. His chip stack is almost triple the size of the average, so he’s extremely well positioned moving forward, particularly with respect to the format of this tournament.

The speed of Turbos can surprise players with the relative speed of the blind increases. If you don’t make moves or catch cards early, those pesky, fast-rising blinds can eat into your stack in a hurry, depleting your ability to use patience to your advantage, increasing the pressure on players to make due with more marginal card combinations.

Good luck to Pawan as he makes his way into level 10 and beyond, and good luck to all the rest of the Colossus Turbo players – you’re going to need it!

The rockets keep holding, and the best hand wins.

With blinds at 800/1,600, Philppe Plouffe open shoved and found a call by Anthony Ribeiro.

Plouffe: Ace of Spades 10 of Hearts
Ribeiro: Ace of Clubs Ace of Diamonds

Plouffe had some outs on the Jack of Hearts King of Diamonds King of Hearts flop, but he couldn’t improve on the 4 of Clubs turn or on the King of Clubs river.

The players are about to go on break whch will allow us to up[date the leaderboard.
