    Tag Team Champions: Team Ravary

    September 30, 2019September 30, 2019 | 2:45am | Playground

Event #6 of the September Power Weekend, the $300 + $30 Tag Team, brought out a boisterous field of 84 teams. The healthy turnout easily surpassed the $20,000 guarantee and allowed 11 teams to reach the money. The tournament hall was buzzing with excitement throughout the morning, afternoon, evening and night as players shuffled back and forth from their shared stacks, discussing strategy and sweating hands at every opportunity.

In the end, it took 28 levels of play for this event to reach its conclusion. The final table was a seesaw battle that saw the chips move from one team to another; every team that reached the final table went through some major swings in the process.

Ultimately, it was Team Ravary that prevailed. They quietly maintained one of the larger stacks in play from the beginning to the end of this event, without ever holding the outright chip lead until the late stages of the final table. Both team members played consistent, determined and focused poker throughout the day. The later things went, the better they got for Team Ravary. They kept their patient approach at the final table, before they were able to capitalize on a series of strong starting hands that sent several teams to the rail. In the heads-up battle against Team Javier, both team members found ways to win lots of chips without showdown, and they were able to outflop their opponents on the final hand to become Tag Team champions! Congratulations!

Tag Team Champions: Team Ravary, $6,000

    Second Place: Team Javier, $4,514

Team Blais has just had its run ended by Team Ravary. As with most of the hands at the final table, the chips went in the middle preflop. It was 2 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts for Team Blais against Team Ravary’s Queen of Spades Jack of Hearts. The ducks stayed ahead on the flop and turn, but the river put the fourth heart on the board, giving Team Ravary a jack-high flush.

Heads-up play is now underway between Team Javier and Team Ravary.

Following the elimination of Team Audet in fourth place, only three teams remain in the Tag Team. Team Audet had a strong run in the late stages, but they came up short in a critical hand when their Ace of Spades Jack of Diamonds lost a preflop all in against Team Ravary’s King of Hearts Queen of Diamonds that cost them most of their stack. They were eliminated shortly after and went to collect their $2,700 payout.

Here is a look at the last three teams standing:

Team Tremblay has been eliminated in eighth place. It was a preflop all in where Team Tremblay had the best of it with Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs against Ace of Clubs 9 of Clubs, but the 8 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds 9 of Spades King of Hearts board did not work out in their favour as their opponents’ pair on the turn was enough to take down the pot and send Team Tremblay to the rail. The team will collect $900 for their final table appearance.

Team Peltier was eliminated in seventh place, which earned them $1,200 for their efforts.

The next bustout was Team Goncalo, eliminated by Team Audet in a preflop clash between two premium hands. It was pocket aces for Team Audet against Team Goncalo’s pocket queens. The aces stood, sending Team Goncalo to the cashier to collect their $1,600 payout.

Only eight teams remain at the final table. Team Javier, who had a huge chip advantage over the field earlier in the afternoon, has returned to the front of the pack with a commanding chip lead.

The first team to exit after the field reached the money was Team “TLB,” who collected $560 for their efforts. They were followed shortly after by Team Beaudry, who cashed $620 for their tenth place finish. In ninth place was Team Sauve, good enough for a $750 payout.

The chip counts of the remaining teams are listed in the following table.

Following a lengthy period of hand-for-hand play, the remaining teams are now in the money!

The teams approached the bubble with considerable caution, each teammate wanting to make sure they did not let the other down with any unnecessarily risky plays or mistakes at this stage. Eventually, it came down to a preflop all in where the short stack in the field got the short end of the stick. The short stack moved in with Ace of Spades 7 of Clubs, only to run into Ace of Hearts Queen of Diamonds.

The field has been reduced to two tables, bringing about a complete seating redraw. The crowd in the tournament hall has thinned out, but there is more excitement in the air than at any point this afternoon, thanks to the rapidly approaching money bubble.

An average stack now provides 25 big blinds, and you can be sure that each team is managing them carefully.

Only 24 teams remain in the Tag Team, and the tension is beginning to mount in the tournament hall. The field now fits on four tables, flanked by onlookers and teammates at the neighbouring tables.

No decisions are being taken lightly at this point, as any situation that might put a team’s stack at risk merits the use of a consultation chip. Team Javier and Team Goncalo are still in charge of the largest stacks in play, but with the blinds catching up to the field, no stack is safe.

Here is a look at the action from level 15:

The action is set to resume in level 15, with only 29 teams still in contention.

The leading team from the last break, Team Javier, has lost a considerable portion of their chips, but they are still comfortably in the lead with their 53-big-blind stack. The blinds are beginning to catch up to the field, as the chip average now provides roughly 24 big blinds, which makes each passing hand take on greater and great importance

The players have just returned to their seats following the latest break in the action. Slightly more than half of the starting field has been eliminated, with 40 of 84 teams still in the running.

Several teams managed to accumulate more than double the current chip average of 36 big blinds. But one team – Team Javier – stands head and shoulders above the rest with a stack of 137 big blinds. Team Javier has had everything go right for them so far this afternoon; both players ran up their starting stacks prior to the merge and they were given the hot seat in the redraw, allowing them to get maximum value from the disproportionately large number of strong hands they have received since then.

The Tag Team is now down to the final 48 teams, out 84 teams entered. Cooperation and communication will be key to taking down this event, so the players are playing their consultation chips wisely and using the one-minute break between levels to pass along important information while they transition.

The chip average provides slightly more than 36 big blinds so the play is relatively deep-stacked play, but, as everyone knows, the blinds only go up so the teams will have to enjoy it while it lasts.
