    Deepstack Re-entry Champion: Nassim K

    July 21, 2019July 22, 2019 | 8:59pm | Playground

Event #4 of the July Power Weekend, the $100 + $10 Deepstack Re-entry, proved to be a tremendously popular event. The field of 147 entries (including 28 re-entries) built a prize pool that greatly exceeded the $5,000 guarantee and filled the tournament hall with energized tournament players on the hunt for a big payout.

The early levels saw a steady flow of players moving in and out of the tournament, many of whom made their way back to the cage to re-enter. In most cases, the players sprinted out of the gate this afternoon and never looked back, keeping up the high-paced action all the way to the late stages. The only time things slowed down was for the money bubble when 20 players remained. The hand-for-hand play lasted for more than an entire blind level, as several short stacks managed to win their all ins, but it was eventually brought to an end in a battle of the blinds following a pre-flop all in.

Once the field reached the money, the action returned to the frantic pace seen in the early levels, which quickly brought about the final table. Even at the final table, the players kept the pedal to the metal. There was a brief pause for ICM negotiations that saw the four finalists divide up the remaining prize pool, while leaving a little extra for the eventual winner.

Nassim K had flown under the radar for most of the tournament. He managed his chips carefully and was fortunate enough to have good timing in the late stages. He seized the chip lead from longtime tournament leader Manfred Gunther when two tables remained and only distanced himself from the rest of the players from there. It proved to be Nassim’s night, as he steamrolled the final table to claim victory. Congratulations!

    ICM chop

    July 21, 2019 | 8:36pm | Playground

The action continued at a blistering pace on the final two tables, quickly reducing the field to the final table. Upon reaching the final table, the action did not relent, sending players to the rail in quick succession. Before long only four players remained.

The four finalists – Manfred Gunther, Jean Yves Demers, Marc-Antoine Plaisance and Nassim K – agreed to an ICM chop of the remaining prize pool. Gunther, the longtime tournament chip leader, had lost his chip advantage and settled for $1,755, Demers controlled the third largest stack and received $2,080, Plaisance was second in chips and took $2,209, while Massim had the chip lead and got the biggest cut of the prize pool for $2,585. The remaining $400 will go to the eventual champion.

Here is the complete list of payouts for all the other players who made the money in this event.

Manfred Gunther leads the way, as the Deepstack Re-entry is down to the last two tables. The blinds have reached dizzying heights, meaning that almost everyone in the field has a very shallow stack. Most of the hands are played out pre-flop, but after a few eliminations, the stacks will be deep enough for the remaining players to see some flops.

After a lengthy period of hand-for-hand play, the remaining players in the Deepstack Re-entry have just made the money.

Following the last update, the field was quickly reduced to 20 players. This moment meant the beginning of hand-for-hand play that saw several short stacks double up in the process. In every case, the players were at risk following pre-flop all ins, as the shallow stacks made it difficult for most players in the field to see flops.

In the end, it came down to a battle of the blinds between Manfred Gunther and his (former) neighbour Philippe Mangiacotti. Gunther, who controls the largest stack in play, moved all in from his small blind after the action folded to him. Mangiacotti was low on chips and decided to take his chances to double up. Unfortunately for Mangiacotti, he only had one live card and did not connect with the board so Gunther’s ace-high was good enough to win at showdown and take down the pot.

The high-octane action has reduced the field to the final three tables at the mid-point of level 16.

The dealers are pitching all-in cards nearly as often as the deck, with eliminations on almost every hand dealt. This phenomenon has been helped along by some coolers, like when Steve Taylor ran his pocket kings into Manfred Gunther’s pocket aces a few minutes ago, but the rising price of poker has been the main driver, as players try to stay out ahead of the blinds by making strong pre-flop moves.

The top 19 players will cash this event so the rapidly approaching money bubble might slow things down. But the sprint to the finish will certainly resume once the bubble passes.

The players have just returned from their latest break, and only 35 players remain in contention.

The pressure of the blinds is mounting rapidly so the players will have to be resourceful to keep their heads above water as we enter the late stages of this event. With an average stack providing roughly 16 big blinds, there will be some major swings in the levels ahead as pre-flop all ins become more and more common.

The current chip leader, Manfred Gunther is the only player in the field with more than 40 big blinds at his disposal, but he will need to stay sharp to preserve his chip lead because, at this stage, everything can change quickly.

As the timer winds down on the thirteenth level of play, only 48 players remain in the Deepstack Re-entry.

The frenetic pace set at the outset of the tournament has been maintained and shows no signs of slowing down. Although the players started with deep stacks, the blinds have caught up to many in the field, limiting their options. The current chip average provides only slightly more than 17 blinds, which means that many in the field are below that threshold and have been forced into “shove-or-fold” poker.

Here’s an updated look at the field.

Thanks to the huge turnout for the Deepstack Re-entry, the prize pool guarantee of $5,000 was nearly tripled, and the top 19 finishers will reach the money this afternoon. But there is still a long way to go before the field gets there. With 91 players still in running and a chip average that provides 47 big blinds, there is an exciting afternoon of deepstack poker ahead!

The wild action continued right up until the first break of the day, generating 28 re-entries before play resumed in level seven. There are still 104 players in contention out of 147 total entries.

Many players in the field ran up some imposing stacks before the first break, however, Carlos Gerones stands head and shoulders above the field. Gerones found ways to more than quintuple his starting stack, putting him at more than four times the current chip average and nearly doubling his nearest rival.

The players wasted no time putting chips in play this morning in the Deepstack Re-entry. A healthy crowd made it out to start things off, and the re-entries and new players have been adding up quickly ever since. The field has just reached 100 entries, and there have already been 9 re-entries, putting this event on pace to more than double the prize pool guarantee of $5,000.

The late registration and re-entry period will be open until 1:15pm, so there’s still time to get in on the action. Don’t miss out!

Here’s a look at the field from the early levels of play.

It’s time for the Deepstack Re-entry!

    July 21, 2019 | 10:48am | Playground

The stage is set for Event #4 of the July Power Weekend, the $100 + $10 Deepstack Re-entry. When the action begins at 11:00am, players will have 30,000 in chips at their disposal to grind through as many 20-minute levels of full ring play as it takes to crown a champion. The tournament hall will be buzzing with activity this afternoon, as Day 2 of the Playground 100 and Day 3 of the Playground 500 will be running along side the Deepstack Re-entry. There will be three event champions crowned today, with thousands in prizes awarded. It’s going to be an exciting day of poker!

With the prize pool guarantee set at $5,000, the Deepstack Re-entry is sure to bring out a huge field. Players will be able to re-enter as many times as they wish during the late registration period, which will run until the beginning of the seventh level of play at 1:15pm.

The dealers are ready and the players are making their way to their seats. The cards will be in the air soon. Good luck to all!
