On table 38,  with the blinds at 10,000/20,000, Jason Galet, sitting in UTG+1 opened to 50,000 and had a flat call by Eric Hoevenaars two seats to his left. When action made it to Jason Teurquety in the big blind, he jammed his stack.  Galet asked for a count, and once the dealer confirmed that it was for just over 600,000, Galet made the call and Hoevenaars folded his hand and got out of the way.

The situation was sweet as can be for Galet who was holding Ace of Spades Ace of Clubs, going against Teurquety’s Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs. The board ran out 8 of Clubs 4 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts Queen of Spades 6 of Spades and Galet’s pocket aces held as he added 600,000 from Teurquety plus the blinds and antes as well as 50,000 from Hoevenaars. Teurquety had been crushing the field throughout the entire tournament but was left totally crippled after this monster beat.

With the button on Robert Turcotte in seat seven, and blinds at 10,000/20,000, Dave Bonneau opened to 40,000. It folded around to Turcotte who jammed his stack all in. Bonneau asked for a count, and once the dealer confirmed the amount of 173,000, Bonneau made the call.

Turcotte: Ace of Diamonds King of Hearts
Bonneau: Queen of Clubs Jack of Spades

The flop came 3 of Hearts 6 of Hearts King of Clubs, giving Turcotte a pair of kings. The turn was the 5 of Hearts, and with the Ace of Hearts on the river, Turcotte made a flush to improve upon his pair of kings, and picked up 173,000 from Bonneau.

Teurquety rivers a set to knock out Quinn

With blinds at 5,000/10,000 action folded to Patrick Quinn who moved in his 10 big blind stack. Jason Teurquety made the call and everyone else moved out of the way.

It was a classic coin flip situation: Quinn holding Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds, and Teurquety with 9 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts. The 8 of Diamonds Ace of Clubs Jack of Diamonds flop was great for Quinn who hit his ace. The turn did not change anything, but the 9 of Clubs on the river gave Teurquety a set of nines to eliminate Quinn.

A break is coming up at which will give us a chance to look for the big stacks in play and report back.

Yaxley doubles-up with The Big Slick

On table 33, Arnold Yaxley said to me “I’m on life support and need to double-up”. Well, on the very next hand, his wish came true. With blinds at 4,000/8,000, action folded to Jeff Cote who raised it up to 18,000. Yaxley, seated to to Cote’s left, looked down at his cards and proceeded to move his stack into the middle. It folded back to Cote who asked the dealer for a count. Yaxley had 55,000 and Cote threw in a chip to signal a call. The hands were tabled.

Yaxley: Ace of Spades King of Hearts
Cote: Queen of Hearts Jack of Diamonds

Yaxley was ahead and needed to dodge either a queen, a jack, or perhaps a straight or flush. The flop came 8 of Clubs 10 of Spades 4 of Clubs  and Yaxley was still in the lead. The turn was the 8 of Diamonds, which changed nothing, and the river King of Spades gave Yaxley a pair of kings to seal the deal.

    Arnold Yaxley

A few tables over on 37, Nick “Shooter McGavin” Soller raised it up to 20,000 in an unopened pot. Ron S. made the call and both blinds folded. The flop came Jack of Diamonds 4 of Hearts 9 of Clubs and Soller checked. Ron S. checked back. The turn brought the 10 of Diamonds and action again went check-check. The river was the 8 of Clubs and this time Soller led out for 25,000. Ron S. made the call and the cards were opened up.

Soller: 5 of Spades 5 of Clubs
Ron S. Queen of Diamonds Jack of Spades

Ron S. had flopped top pair and rivered a straight. The chips were sent his way and his intimidating stack grew larger.

As this post was being written up, Yaxley walked by our desk with a payout slip in his hand, meaning that his dreams must have been crushed a few hands later.

Day 2 of the Playground 100 has just began, as the tournament floor has just announced, “dealers…..shuffle up and deal!”. The tournament has been a massive success this weekend and although there was a guaranteed $50,000 prize pool, with the tournament attracting a total of 1,054 runners through one online and five live starting flights, the prize pool swelled to a massive $102,238 (after 3% staff gratuity), and all 107 players who have returned today are guaranteed at the very least a min-cash of $200, but are all of course trying to make it to the final table and the first place prize of $18,000, along with the champion bragging rights. What outstanding value for sure for such a modest $100 + $10 buy-in.

Come back to the Playgroundnews.ca website to follow all of the action!

    Day 2 seating draw

    July 21, 2019 | 2:06pm | Playground

The Playground 100 was a huge success that brought out progressively larger fields throughout the numerous starting flights. In all, there were 1,054 entries, enough to more than double the prize pool guarantee of $50,000.

There will be 107 players returning to battle it out this afternoon. All those who are returning for Day 2 are already guaranteed a payout of $200. The Playground 100 champion will walk away with a cool $18,000, and there are hefty four-figure prizes for anyone who makes the final table.

When the Day 2 action gets underway at 3:00pm, the players will be seated according to the following table.
