Wielopolski For the Win in a Four-Way All In

On tabel 22, one of the chip leaders from the first break, Piotr Wielopolski, had lost a massive pot a little while ago and needed to make a move to get back some chips. He opened with a min-raise from 3,000 to 6,000 and found calls from Joshua James Myers and Melanie Viens seated on his direct left. When it was Josaiah Longmore-Edwards turn act, he re-popped it to 32,000. Wielopolski decided that it seemed like the right spot to try to go heads-up with Longmore-Edwards and see where it takes him. He shoved his stack. To his surprise, all three other players in the hand also put all of their chips in and all of the sudden there was a four-way all in.

Longmore-Edwards: Ace of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds
Wielopolski:  King of Diamonds 10 of Clubs
Myers: King of Clubs Jack of Diamonds
Viens: Jack of Hearts 9 of Hearts

Wielopolski was behind Myers who out-kicked him and both were behind Longmore-Edwards who had a suited ace. That all changed when the dealer fanned out 10 of Spades 9 of Diamonds 4 of Spades on the flop, giving Wielopolski top pair. The 8 of Spades turn and 2 of Clubs river were clean for him and all of the sudden Wielopolski quadrupled his stack!

As play resumes in level 17, the remaining players in Day 1C are only three eliminations away from advancing to Day 2.

There are now two monster stacks out ahead of the field. Aladdin Hammoud has maintained his strong play and added to his stack since taking the chip lead after level 12. But Kevin St Denis managed to go on a hot streak during the last level to capture a narrow lead over Hammoud.

There are only four tables remaining on Day 1C.

The end of the flight is now looming on the horizon, as there are only eight eliminations to go before the survivors bag their chips for Day 2. And the tension is mounting. As the blinds slowly creep up, so do the consequences of each decision, which has led to a lot of emotion on display during the last two levels, something only the drama of the late stages of a tournament can bring out.

Here is a look at the action from level 15:

Cournoyer Leads the Field Into Level Five

    • Level: 5
    • Small Blind: 800

The players just returned from their first break of the night and there are 104 players still fighting it out from the 129 entries (including 14 re-entries), putting just over 14 million chips into play in this flight.

The average chip stack is at 124,000, and many of the players have now accumulated double the average. A select group has also been able to more than triple the average, led by Joey Cournoyer who is the only one so far to go north of 400K. Cournoyer is sitting on a stack 425,300 chips, good for 266 big blinds.

Here is the first leaderboard of the evening:

Play has just resumed in level 13, and Day 1C has a new chip leader. Longtime chip leader Jean-Francois Levesque was eliminated on the last hand before the break by this flight’s new chip leader, Aladdin Hammoud.

Hammoud catapulted to the top of the leaderboard after taking down a massive three-way pot. He was fortunate enough to flop top set against another player’s bottom set and Levesque’s over pair. All the chips went in on the flop, and Hammoud’s set of eights held up to give him an overwhelming chip lead. With more than 200 big blinds in his possession, Hammoud is in great position to cruise into Day 2.

Here are the top stacks in play:

The room is filling up nicely and there are now 95 players left out of the 101 entries (including three re-entries). Players have right up until the start of level 11 at 10:30pm to join the action with a full 100,000 chip starting stack.  With the slow structure and 30-minute blind levels it offers a great opportunity to try to get yourself a piece of the $500,000 guaranteed prize pool.

Here some of the players grinding it out in level three:

Late Registration Closed; 31 Players Will Advance

    • Level: 11
    • Small Blind: 2K

    January 23, 2020 | 5:43pm | Playground

The late registration and re-entry period has just ended on Day 1C. But before the beginning of level 11 there was time for this flight to take in 217 entries, making this the largest starting flight to date.

There are still 88 players in contention, the top 31 of which will advance to Day 2 and secure a payout from this event. With lots of chips to go around, nearly 22 million, there is a good chance that we see the overall chip leader emerge from Day 1C.

The current chip average gets players just less than 50 big blinds, leaving lots of room to play for most in the field.

    Day 1D is starting now!

    January 23, 2020January 23, 2020 | 5:01pm | Playground

Welcome to Day 1D of the 2020 World Cup of Cards Grand Prix Canada. This $200+ $20 event offers amazing value with an outstanding $500,000 guaranteed prize pool. There have already been three live flights that have so far attracted close to 600 entries and players have also had the option to play an online starting flight on partypoker. Day 1E online is tonight at 7:00pm and is the last online flight.

Players start with 100,000 chips and play through 30-minute blind levels until the field is reduced to one in seven players, at which point all remaining players will be in the money and will bag for Day 2. Play will start 10-handed and move to nine-handed as soon as space permits.

The Grand Prix Canada is a re-entry event with unlimited re-entries permitted until the end of the late registration period at the beginning of level 11, which is at 10:30pm on Day 1D. Players may enter additional Day 1s even if they have survived a previous Day 1 with chips. Players who qualify for Day 2 more than once resume play on Day 2 with their largest qualifying stack; all other qualifying stacks are forfeited but each additional bagged stack will earn the player a $400 min-cash.

Good luck to all of the competitors!

The players have just returned to their seats and the action is underway in level 9. The field now counts 108 remaining players, out of 200 total entries. As expected, this has become the largest starting flight yet, with nearly 45 minutes left in the late registration and re-entry period.

The gap between the big and small stacks in the field has become immense. Some players are clinging to their tournament lives with only a handful of blinds, while others, like current chip leader Jean-Francois Levesque, are well above 150 big blinds.

    January 23, 2020 | 3:50pm | Playground

Players are making the most out of the extended late registration and re-entry period on Day 1C, as new players and re-entries keep rolling in. There are nearly 19 million in chips in play, thanks in large part to the 49 re-entries collected up to this point. With roughly 100 minutes to go before the end of late registration, this flight is likely to be the largest yet.

The chip leader at the first break, Jean-Francois Levesque, has fallen off the torrid pace he set out with but still controls one of the largest stacks in play.

Here is a look at the action from level 7:

Online Day 1D Puts 11 More Qualifiers into Day 2

    January 23, 2020 | 3:02pm | Playground

The second-to-last online starting flight for the Grand Prix Canada ran last night on partypoker and took in a total of 74 entries. As with all other online starting flights, play concluded on Online Day 1D in level 17, when the field was reduced to the last 11 players. Those players will rejoin their stacks at Playground for Day 2 on Sunday, January 26, at 1:00pm. To see the combined Day 1 results, click here.

Online Day 1E, the final online starting flight on partypoker, starts tonight at 7:00pm.

Four Levels Played; Three Hours Left to Register

    • Small Blind: 800
    • Big Blind: 1.6K

    • Entries: 158
    January 23, 2020 | 2:41pm | Playground

As expected, Day 1C has brought out another strong turnout. Through four levels of play, there are still 114 players left in contention from 156 entries. Most of the players who hit the rail so far opted to re-enter, pushing the number of re-entries to 28, which has helped put more than 15 million in chips in play.

Late registration and unlimited re-entries will be available until 5:30pm, leaving plenty of time to (re-)enter this flight. For anyone who would prefer a fresh start in another starting flight, Day 1D gets going at 5:00pm.
