Women’s Series II Event #1 Champion: Christine Park

    February 22, 2020February 24, 2020 | 10:52pm | Playground

Event #1 of the 2020 Women’s Series attracted 44 players who battled it out on the felt today. The top six spots would be in the money with a cool $2,210 for the event champion, along with a sweet trophy and winner’s pendant.

There were many returning players from Playground’s tremendously successful inaugural Women’s Series, which was a tremendous success. There was a jovial mood in the air today, as the players clearly had a great time at the tables. But make no mistake, all participants arrived to play some serious poker and were fierce competitors.

This was truly Christine Park’s day. She took an early lead and never looked back, building a mountain of chips that only grew throughout the day. Her chip lead ranged from significant to seemingly insurmountable.

When the final table was formed, Park had a lead of nearly 2:1 over her nearest rival, and it would continue to grow from there. When play went heads-up between Park and Shaelene Mcinnis, Park held roughly 90% of the chips in play. Mcinnis gave it her best effort and managed to chip up a little bit, but she was unable to put a serious dent in Park’s massive stack.

On the final hand of play, both players got a piece of the 10 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs 8 of Hearts flop and the chips went in the middle. Park’s 10 of Spades 6 of Diamonds had a lead over Mcinnis’ Jack of Clubs 8 of Diamonds, but Park had to dodge a lot of outs to claim victory. In the end, the 4 of Hearts turn and King of Clubs river left the results of the flop unchanged, allowing Park to prevail.

Congratulations to the champion of the first open event of the 2020 Women’s Series, Christine Park!

Event #1 Champion: Christine Park, $2,190

    Second Place: Shaelene Mcinnis, $1,470

After the elimination of Claire Briere in third place, the tournament is now heads-up between Christine Park and Shaelene McInnis for the champion trophy and winner’s pendant. Although Park has a massive chip lead over McInnis, McInnis is a fighter and she is trying her best to make a come-back.

And the Christine Park poker show continues. She is not only playing well, she is also running good, which is always a great thing in poker. Park was ahead holding Ace of Hearts Jack of Hearts against Claire Briere with Ace of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds. She then picked up the flush draw on the Queen of Hearts 3 of Clubs 9 of Hearts flop and sealed the deal on the 10 of Hearts turn, while also picking up outs to make either a royal or a straight flush. The 7 of Hearts on the river was so close, as either the 8 of Hearts or King of Hearts would have been fun!

Briere leaves in third place and now has a seat for champion final later this year.

    3rd Place: Claire Briere, $990

Beaupre Lebire sent to the rail in 4th place by Park ($660)

Claire Briere has done well in the inaugural 2109 Women’s Series and continues to show her strength here today in Event #1 of the 2020 series. After having knocked out Joy Benn, she then lost a few chips but just secured a nice double-up against Christine Park when her pocket tens held up against Park’s ace-queen.

A couple of hands later, both players flopped a flush and the money went in, but it was Briere one more time with the best hand as she had the nut flush. park was looking for the 10 of Clubs to make a gutshot straight flush, but the 4 of Clubs river just wasn’t able to help her out at all.

In a battle of the short stacks, Claire Briere limped in for 6,000 chips only to see Joy Benn move all in. All of the other players folded and after giving it some thought, Briere made the call.

Benn: Ace of Spades Jack of Hearts
Briere: King of Diamonds Jack of Clubs

Benn was way out in front and Briere would need some help from the dealer in order to stay alive. And it was help that she received when the dealer fanned out a King of Clubs Queen of Clubs 2 of Clubs flop, making a pair of kings for Briere. Neither player was holding a club although Benn still had outs with a straight draw. The 3 of Spades turn and 2 of Diamonds river were bricks and Briere doubles-up while sending Benn to the rail.

    6th Place: Joy Benn, $290
