2020 Seniors Series Event #1 Champion: John Hosegrove

    February 24, 2020February 24, 2020 | 3:50am | Playground

The first event of the 2020 Seniors’ Series took place this afternoon. The kickoff to this exclusive series proved to be a huge success, attracting 213 entries to build a prize pool of $37,062, which dwarfed the $10,000 guarantee. Aside from the huge cash prizes, players were also competing for series leaderboard points. The top 40% of the field in each open event received points toward the series leaderboard; following the open events, the top 30 point earners will receive an entry into the Championship Event.

The chip lead changed hands several times during the early stages of play. Late in the day, as the money bubble approached, John Hosegrove found his place at the top of the leaderboard, and it proved to be one that he would not relinquish.

In the end, it came down to Hosegrove and Patrice Ravary. After a long day of poker, their heads-up match was brief, as the mounting blinds forced the action. The chips went in preflop, and both players watched with anticipation. It was 10 of Diamonds  7 of Diamonds for Hosegrove against Ravary’s Ace of Hearts 2 of Hearts. Hosegrove improved to two pair on the flop and coasted to victory from there.

Congratulations to the first Seniors’ Series champion of 2020, John Hosegrove!

Robert Amirault had Wafic Fala’s number on the final table. It started when Amirault cracked Fala’s pocket aces with pocket jacks.

A little while later, Fala put his chips in with Ace of Clubs Queen of Spades and was called by Amirault, who was ahead with King of Diamonds King of Hearts. The board runout was of no help to Fala who was sent to the tournament desk to collect his fifth-place payout slip.

Robert Dagenais is no stranger to Playground and he often goes deep in tournaments. He played a great game today. Although never made the leaderboard, he had an above-average stack in front of him throughout the afternoon. Eventually, the blinds caught up and forced him into a preflop all in. Unfortunately for Dagenais, Patrice Ravary woke up with pocket tens, which held up at showdown.
